TR Dry Szamorodni - 2020
£33.00
This is an incredibly unusual style of wine! Whole bunches of late harvested and botyrtised grapes (that are usually reserved for the best sweet wines) are fermented until they are dry, which means that the alcohol ends up being at 15.5% rather than their sweet counterparts at 11-12%. These are aged in barrels for around 3 years, and a layer of flor forms (similar to sherry) allowing for a bit of oxidation.
As a result, when you smell this, it has the same aromas of a sweet Tokaj (Aszu) - with dried apricot, candied orange peel, ginger. However, this wine also has a slight nuttiness to it. I would have it with hard cheese, but have fun and experiment. It's a great Christmas wine.
Comparable to... nothing else I've had before!
